Summary
of the six levels
Non Swimmer - Level 1 & 2
For those with no previous experience of swimming
to the new water environment, developing confidence
and being at ease in the water. Achieved through informal
play, involving moving around freely, submerging and
opening the eyes, floating, and using the arms and
legs to achieve a simple form of travel, both on the
front and back.
Beginner - Level 3 & 4
The emphasis is on building a sound foundation in
those aspects of “watermanship” which
will later underpin the performance of sound swimming
technique. Becoming completely “at home”
on and under the water, developing control in water
breathing and learning Front Crawl, Breast Stroke
and Back Stroke.
Improver 1 - Level 5 & 6
The focus is on using the main swimming strokes with
a continuing emphasis on the importance of good streamlining
and breathing control – over a minimum of 10
metres. Also introducing aquatic skills such as sculling,
treading water and swimming underwater.
Improver 2 - Level 7 & 8
The aim is essentially to consolidate aquatic skills
along with controlled breathing, so that pupils can
swim competently, using correct basic techniques on
three of the main strokes over 25 metres and on Butterfly
over 10 metres. In addition, turns and practices for
diving are introduced.
Advanced 1 - Level 9 & 10
While developing more efficient swimming, this level
also consolidates associated aquatic disciplines,
synchronized swimming, water polo and diving as well
as promoting expertise in personal water safety and
survival swimming. From this stage, pupils with interest
and enthusiasm will be ready to move on to participate
across the range of swimming and aquatic sports with
a solid foundation.
Advanced 2 - Level 11 & 12
As well as the further development of the main swimming
strokes, this category acts as an introduction to
the early stages of training in competitive swimming.
The development of both basic aerobic endurance and
of swimming speed is integrated within the program.
Fitness/ Honours
For those children who have completed all the levels
and wish to maintain their fitness by working towards
